Jann’s Jottings - December 2025
“The most practical pages for perusal on the web”
Jotting (defn): short details of significant events, behaviours and conversations about wellbeing, growth and education/career.
Wellbeing Jot: Gifts
‘Tis the giving season! This season, along with actual gifts, my challenge to us all is to give the gift of attention to those closest to us. In the words of Simone Weil, philosopher, who writes on the gift of offering others our whole and complete focus:
"Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity."
(Source: Letter to Joë Bousquet April 13, 1942)
May you have many opportunities to be generous this season. It is deeply rewarding.
Growth Jot: Invitations over Instructions
At this time of the year, we feel an urgency to get things done. No doubt your task list both at home and at work is long and it is worth remembering that those you live and work with have their own demands too.
Instructions tell us where to go, what to do and how to be. They are measurable, functional, clinical – think safety procedures on a plane or building Lego.
Invitations are gentler, provide choice, preserve the relationship, invite partnership and participation. They ask us to proceed with care, respect and love.
During this Advent season, we are called to wait. This gives opportunity to listen to the invitations of your heart. I invite you to seek:
Alignment over achievement
Relationship over rules
Presence over performance
Love over to-do lists
Wonder and awe over worry
Invitations may include a nudge to rest or choosing kindness, courage and forgiveness over worry, fear or resentment.
Ponder this: What invitation is calling to you now?
Career Jot: Reflect and Rejoice
As another year draws to a hasty, hectic and hopefully happy end, my hope is that you find some time over the break to reflect and rejoice on your career and achievements this year. I offer these questions as a starting point to contemplate as you wander along the seashore, journal your thoughts in private or partake of your favourite beverage and converse with a friend:
People: What relationships have you cultivated that resulted in growth, connection and belonging this year?
Projects: What are the projects that you have conceived of, implemented and brought to fruition? How did you grow in your leadership through this process?
Patterns: How have you evolved, grown and changed because of healthy and effective habits you intentionally adopted in your life and leadership? What changes do you need?
Past: What do you need to let go of that no longer serves you so that you can move into 2026 lighter, clearer and more present?
