“The most practical pages for perusal on the web”
Jotting (defn): short details of significant events, behaviours and conversations about wellbeing, growth, and career.
Wellbeing Jot: Value delivery and gratitude
One of the sayings in our family is “Whatever you do, do it well.”
I like to think of this as the concept of value delivery to those I work and interact with in every encounter. It looks like giving others exponentially more benefit than they could ever expect. Do I get it right all the time, absolutely not, but being aware of it helps me improve daily.
It is definitely an aspirational goal based on the Golden rule for me and I know it nurtures my wellbeing when I do it well.
The Golden rule is about generosity, abundance and benevolence for others and for self.
Try this: start with gratitude, open-heartedness, and positive thoughts towards others and watch your own wellbeing improve.
Ponder this: Who can I practice extreme value delivery with today?
Growth Jot: Letting Go
Imagine trying to scuba dive on a beautiful reef with an anchor tethering you to a sea wall or climbing a mountain with a recliner chair on your back so you can enjoy the view in comfort when you eventually get there. Hard and unsatisfying.
When we enable ourselves to let go of that which burdens us, keeps us stuck in past events or no longer fits our values we are able to move into resonance, joy and being present.
Letting go may look like:
Releasing control of the outcomes you cannot control.
Relishing the permission to pivot.
Relinquishing fear of failure to embrace new ways of thinking and doing.
Requiring courage that you have an abundance inside you and that you have champions to cheer you on.
Remembering to let go enables equipping for the next chapter, challenge or change that needs to happen.
Ponder this: What are you holding on to that requires releasing?
Career Jot: Nourish to Flourish*
We need to be nourished to flourish. Obvious when we think about fertilising plants or providing healthy nutrition for our bodies, however what does nourishing our staff to flourish mean?
Flourishing means to grow luxuriantly, to thrive, to achieve success, to prosper. The word flourish comes from the Latin and French word to blossom. Interestingly Florence, in Tuscany Italy, was named in Roman times (59 BC) and means ‘flowering colony’. Florence is home to many masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance art and architecture as well as European trade and finance. It is still a thriving, prosperous UNESCO world heritage site.
Flourishing at work is feeling positive emotions as well as functioning optimally whilst being true to ourselves and reaching our potential. For a staff member this looks like being seen, heard, trusted and valued. However, there can be a tension in this space. Rehal and Van Nieuwerburg (2022) found that when we are treated as professionals who have autonomy, integrity, and agency within positive relationships and a supportive workplace we experience flourishing at work.
Ponder this: How are you creating a ‘flourishing colony’ for your staff?
